License to Wed

For your wedding to be recognized in the eyes of the law, you’re going to need a valid Georgia marriage license before the big day.

To obtain one in Chatham County, you must apply in person at the Chatham County Probate Court, 133 Montgomery Street, Room 509, between Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.  It takes less than a half hour, and the fee is $51.

Both bride and groom must be 18 to apply or 16 with parental consent.

Each applicant must present two forms of valid identification (birth certificate, driver’s license, U.S. passport, Armed Forces ID, Resident Alien ID).

If both the bride and groom are Georgia residents, the marriage license can be obtained in any county in the state of Georgia. If they are non – Georgia residents, the marriage license must be applied for in Chatham County if the marriage is to conducted in Chatham County.

No blood tests are required and there is no waiting period.

If either party has been divorced in the last six months, you must show proof of divorce at the time of application.
